It happened again. Another accident in the mine, but it went well this time. A truck driver saw rocks falling but he managed to turn the vehicle and one rock hit the car and caused damage on that. No one was hurt. The cooridor where this happened was supposed to be safe and reinforced. It seems the mine has to look over its routines thoroughly.

Sadness in Kiruna
The town of Kiruna is blooming at the moment. Optimism about the future, new jobs and so on. Much of this because of the mine. The largest underground mine of the world, besides a very modern one and one with high security.
But now sadness came to town and to the mine. Last Saturday, there was a collapse and one man sitting in his vehicle was buried beneath the stones. He died. Now, issues about security are coming up for discussion. Mining has always been a dangerous job. The discussions about security are good of course. If security levels can be raised more it is good. Nevertheless, mining in Kiruna cannot really be considered dangerous in the manner that early day mining was, or that mining still is in many parts of the world. And it will never be 100% safe, but hopefully as safe as ever possible. Looking to the number of accidents over modern time, mining is not more dangerous than let us say truck-driving, being a pilot, working in a factory and many other things people do for a living.
Nevertheless, every accident is one too much. If LKAB (the company) can make it better I hope they will. I trust they will. I take it they listen to the critical voices that have been heard and do all they can. In the mean time, we think of the people who lost a dear one. Our sympathies go to them.
